European Fight Back On Day 1 Of Ryder Cup !
Europe found themselves having to fight back from a 4-0 foursomes whitewash on a damp misty Friday morning at Hazeltine National, and fight back they did winning the afternoon fourball matches 3-1 to finish 5-3 down to the USA at the end of play on day 1 of 3 days of match play golf.
The morning foursome results were: Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reid beat Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson 3&2. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler beat Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan by 1up. Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson beat Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer 4&2. Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar beat Thomas Pieters and Lee Westwood 5&4. So a solid Friday morning start for the USA with all to play for in the afternoon.
In the afternoon fourballs Europe turned the tide with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose blending well with some quality golf winning 5&4 against Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.
Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera-Bello continued the momentum and beat J. B. Holmes and Ryan Moore 3&2. The momentum continued with Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters beating Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar by 3&2. Danny Willett and Martin Kaymer did not manage to keep the momentum and lost to Brooks Koepka and Brandt Snedeker by a 5&4 margin.
European captain Darren Clarke said at the close of play: “The guys went back out there and they showed just why I’m so proud of them. They showed a massive amount of desire and the fight in them to get themselves right back into it again.”
US captain Davis Love III added: “Obviously I’m happy to be 5-3. I like being ahead but I keep telling our guys there’s eight points a day and then there’s 12 points on Sunday.”
So, 4 more foursomes and 4 more fourballs to play on Saturday and it will be interesting to see how the 8 points are distributed and where the balance lies on Saturday evening. Much more great match play golf to come.
